BarterItOnline.com Gains Bigger Stage
By boston.internet.com Staff

BarterItOnline.com, a Weston-based exchange for businesses and entrepreneurs, has inked a deal with Publications Management Company, a Boston-based publisher of theatre magazines, to promote the website.

As part of the deal, BarterItOnline.com will receive $500,000 in media and advertising from the company over the next five years.

The company was launched in March by Richard L. Cravatts, who holds a doctorate degree in English and was publisher of the Boston Classical Network for two decades. BarterItOnline.com's chairman of the board is Ira Jackson, a former executive vice president at BankBoston.

Through BarterItOnline.com, visitors trade using a common currency, "E-dollars." Purchases and sales are recorded by the exchange, which recieves a commission from the buyer at the time of the purchase. The company lists a range of products and services on its site including: advertising space, freelance workers, office equipment and furniture and timeshare and hotel rooms.

BarterItOnline.com is privately held and is in the process of raising its first round of venture capital financing.

Online bartering system for new economy firms

UNITED STATES-BASED company BarterItOnLine.com has launched an online bartering system called e-marketplace. The system is an "online model of the traditional land-based barter exchange", and is an efficient way of new economy companies increasing sales and decreasing cash expenditures, says the company's chief executive Richard Cravatts.

"Dotcom startups can use barter to minimise cash outlays for Web site development, marketing, public relations . . . and personnel costs -- all of which are normally paid for with expensive, borrowed cash in the early years of a business."

The company says allowing startups to trade parts of their equity and future earnings instead of paying in cash gives entrepreneurs flexibility, and security to venture capitalists "who find so much of their early-stage investment being consumed by expensive marketing and advertising costs."

Buyers and sellers use an online currency called "E-dollars" and BarterItOnline takes a transaction fee from the buyer. Services include Barter Talent -- a list of professionals, such as Web designers, lawyers and accountants; Barter RFP -- a means for users to broadcast their project needs they want to be met; and Media Buyer, which trades online advertising.

Clipscom offers video to BarterItOnline.com customers
Aug 11, 2000 03:17 PM ET

By Carson Reed, dbusiness.com

DALLAS, August 11 (dbusiness.com) -- Looking to trade your copier for a computer?

It might not be heart-stopping action, but a 30-second video of the old workhorse spitting out documents might be just what's needed to convince some procurement officer that you have exactly what he's looking for.

At least, that's the thinking behind an agreement between Boston-based ecommerce aggregator BarterItOnline.com and Web video application service provider Clipscom, which will put streaming video capabilities within reach of BarterItOnline's wheelers and dealers.

As of yesterday morning, BarterItOnline.com customers can upload video clips featuring their products or services through the Dallas-based Clipscom. Customers are directed to a cobranded site where they can purchase increments of video viewing at various download rates. Under terms of the deal, Clipscom will share revenues generated from fees with BarterItOnline.com, said Clipscom Business Development Director Franklin Ballard.

Customers with a minimal amount of technical expertise can upload the video clips to their BarterItOnline.com listing, Ballard said. Customers also can update their video clips and can also transfer the clips to e-mail messages and their own Web sites.

Founded in September 1999, BarterItOnline.com is a privately-held, Boston-based emarketplace for barter. The company's Web site is at www.barteritonline.com

The privately-held Clipscom, Inc., was founded in May 1999. The company's Web site can be found at: http://www.clipscom.com.
